Deep Clean the Protein Skimmer

Welcome to Day 16 of the 31 Days to Build a Better Saltwater Aquarium Challenge.

Your protein skimmer is a hard-working piece of equipment. It creates tiny, scrubbing bubbles that magically remove impurities from the water.

Over time, your protein skimmer will become coated with a biofilm, that’s a fancy word for covered in bacteria and gunk. If you recall, there was a break-in period of time that was needed before your protein skimmer actually started removing some serious nastiness from your water, but when was the last time you gave the skimmer a good cleaning?

I suspect you routinely clean out the skimmer cup because it will overflow if you don’t and the nasty build-up in that cup is just staring you in the face, but when was the last time to you took the skimmer out of the sump or off of the back of the tank and cleaned it up?

Your task is to take some time today to do a thorough cleaning of your protein skimmer.

Bring it back up to ‘refurbished’ condition. Help your equipment help you build a better saltwater Aquarium.
